Boliden Tara Mines Limited Achieves ISRS Level 7
The International Safety Rating System, ISRS, was first introduced at Boliden Tara Mines Limited in 2000 by Det Norske Veritas, DNV. The ISRS is a Management System for Safety and Loss Control, and incorporates other aspects of all functions within the operation.
Boliden Tara Mines Limited is continually improving on existing standards, and introducing new elements in order to eventually achieve ISRS Level 8. Over the past three years DNV has carried out extensive audits, and each time Tara improved by one ISRS Level. Following the audit in May 2005, DNV officially awarded Boliden Tara Mines Limited ISRS Level 7.
The DNV Auditor’s Report states that Tara has an established Loss Control Management System that is continually improving and is a credit to everyone involved in its development and application. While Tara has made consistent progress in applying the principles and concepts of the ISRS, the progress made since the May 2004 audit has been huge and reflects the massive commitment that the operation applies to Loss Control Management.
Major improvements
DNV reports that it was evident to during the audit that Health, Safety and Environmental issues receive significant levels of management attention as being fundamental to the ongoing operation. Some excellent new activities have been established and existing programmes and systems have been further refined. Major improvements have been achieved in lost time accident frequencies and safety is a constant feature of communications and consultations. Excellent work has been done in the area of developing risk assessments, and the AIRS system has been further developed to provide a huge database of critical risk management information.
The DNV Audit report concludes that realising ISRS Level 7 is an excellent achievement and speaks volumes for the efforts, attitude and commitment of Tara Mines’ leadership and workforce.
